Micro-credits for poor families of West Bengal in India

Micro-credits for poor families of West Bengal in India 2019-12-08T12:27:21+05:30

Project Description

The South 24 Parganas district is a very poor area of West Bengal, south of Kolkata, in India. Here all families live in small villages, in conditions of extreme poverty.

Houses collapse every time the monsoon arrives and have no electricity, running water or basic sanitation. In addition, unemployment affects all family units. Micro-credits are the tool to help entire communities to reach a sustainable development and avoid social tragedies.

An income to win the fight against poverty

In the South 24 Parganas district Fondazione L’Albero della Vita collaborates with the missionary organisation PUS (Palli Unnayan Samiti Baruipur). The aim is to carry out income-generating activities that will benefit all local families, whose children receive support through the Child Sponsorship Programme to study and have access to medical care.

Disastrous economic conditions

The South 24 Parganas district, south of Kolkata, is an extremely poor area, divided into blocks, where large families live in very small shacks made of bamboo and mud, without running water, electricity or sanitation. Inhabitants are exposed to the weather and the risk of communicable diseases and live in tragic economic conditions, often without enough money for a decent existence and to provide their children with medical care and education. Thanks to your contribution, Fondazione L’Albero della Vita implements in the district a micro-credit system for social advancement and to develop income-generating activities at a family level in the most vulnerable communities of nine rural villages in the blocks of Sonarpur in Gram Panchayat of Langalberia.

More specifically, the project includes:

  • creation of 45 mutual aid groups to carry out income-generating activities
  • groups’ selection and training on the business activity
  • creation and support of economic farming and breeding activities
  • strengthening of the community-based economic system
  • active collaboration between the economic activities created and local institutions (Panchayat)

The beneficiaries of Fondazione L’Albero della Vita and PUS’ joint project will be 400 poor families of nine different villages of the Sonapur block, in the South 24 Parganas district.
